Tombs of the Liao Dynasty:
Treasures from the afterlife

The Liao were a powerful dynasty that ruled over a large part of East Asia from 907 to 1125. Led by the great Khan, Yelii Aboaji, the dynasty was founded by the Khitan, an ancient nomadic group which had become a strong united force by the dawn of the tenth century. Little trace of the Liao has endured historically; their written language has been lost and very few relics have survived. Consequently, the Liao have been neglected and misunderstood by historians for centuries, and considered as a minor era in the history of China.

RISE OF THE MONGOL KHANS

This spectacular exhibition tells the story of one of the greatest land empires in history and the powerful Khans that shaped it. The story begins in 1162 when a young boy, Temujin, is born. He is to become Genghis Khan, one of the world’s most innovative and effective leaders and warriors. Genghis: Rise of the Mongol Khans reveals how Genghis Khan and his successors, including his grandson Kublai Khan, united the warring tribes of the steppes and went on to control the largest continuous land empire ever to be established.

Following highly successful presentations in Edinburgh and Amsterdam, Ming: The Golden Empire is now available for international tour from 2016. Ming: The Golden Empire is a stunning touring exhibition which tells the story of one of the most famous periods in Chinese history. After successfully overthrowing the great Khans of the Yuan Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang founded the Ming dynasty in 1368.
